Developmental Biology: Master Syllabus & Linked Study Notes

📚 Official Curriculum & Master Syllabus

🐣 Developmental Biology: Syllabus & Course Map

Explain how a single cell becomes a spatially organised organism. The course treats differentiation, morphogenesis, growth, and reproduction as developmental problems, then follows the signals and cell behaviours that solve them in the early embryo, in two vertebrate organs, in regeneration, and in Arabidopsis. A student should be able to predict the result of an isolation, a graft, or the loss of a named signal from the logic of commitment and thresholds, and should know which conclusions belong to evolutionary biology rather than to a shared gene.

Core Learning Outcomes & Competencies

Upon mastery of this comprehensive syllabus, students and researchers are expected to:

✓ Distinguish a fate map from specification and from determination, and predict the outcome of an isolation test versus a transplantation test, including the difference between autonomous and conditional specification.
✓ Describe fertilisation through sperm–egg recognition, the blocks to polyspermy, and calcium-dependent egg activation, and explain why a maternal-effect gene does not behave as an ordinary zygotic allele.
✓ Relate cleavage pattern to yolk, state what changes at the mid-blastula transition, and assign the main derivatives of the three germ layers, the neural tube, and the neural crest.
✓ Trace the Drosophila anterior–posterior cascade from maternal gradients through gap, pair-rule, segment-polarity, and Hox genes, and explain why that early embryo can use transcription-factor morphogens when a frog cannot.
✓ Account for the Spemann–Mangold organiser in molecular terms (dorsal Wnt/β-catenin, Nodal-related signals, BMP antagonists), and apply nodal flow and the clock-and-wavefront model to left–right asymmetry and somitogenesis.
✓ Define a morphogen, and for Hedgehog, Wnt, TGF-β/BMP, FGF, and Notch state the receptor class and the transcriptional outcome.
✓ Explain the three axes of the vertebrate limb, including what later evidence did to the progress-zone model; explain how the eye field is split and how the optic cup and lens are built; and use gut colonisation by neural crest, and interdigital apoptosis, as morphogenetic mechanisms.
✓ Explain differentiation as differential gene expression with the limits of a master regulator; compare regeneration in hydra, planarians, and salamanders with the mammalian case; apply WUSCHEL–CLAVATA, the root quiescent centre, and the ABCDE model to Arabidopsis; and separate deep homology of a toolkit gene from homology of an organ.
