Coherent Filters Fluctuations (Delay), Incoherent Speeds Up & Pulses
Picture This (Mental Hook): In cellular gene circuits, Uri Alon found the Feed-Forward Loop: A master boss X controls manager Y, and both control worker Z! In a Coherent loop, both paths say YES, creating a sign-sensitive delay that filters transient noise. In an Incoherent loop, one path says YES and one says NO, creating a lightning-fast pulse of gene expression!
๐ Visual Diagram & Mental Flow:
COHERENT TYPE-1 FFL (Noise Filter): INCOHERENT TYPE-1 FFL (Pulse Generator):
[X] [X]
+โฑ โฒ+ +โฑ โฒ+
โผ โผ โผ โผ
[Y]โโ+โบ[Z] [Y]โโโโบ[Z] (Represses!)
* X activates Y AND Z * X activates Z, but Y REPRESSES Z!
* Output Z turns ON ONLY after persistent * Causes rapid response acceleration
signal from X (Filters noise spikes!) * Generates biphasic adaptive pulses๐ The Decoded Sequence:
Coherent FFL
Sign-Sensitive Delay
Direct path and indirect path have identical overall signs (e.g. both activating)
Incoherent FFL
Biphasic Pulse
Direct and indirect paths have opposite signs; generates fold-change detection
Examiner Trap / Never Forget: A Coherent Type-1 FFL with an AND gate produces a delay when turning ON, but turns OFF immediately when the input drops (sign-sensitive delay)!
