Jablonski Of Fluorescence Only
Jablonski diagram of absorbance, non-radiative decay, and fluorescence. Electronic transitions are about 1 eV. Vibrational transitions are about 0.1 eV. Rotational transitions (not shown) are about 0.001 eV. Absorption is about 1 femtosecond, relaxation takes about 1 picosecond, fluorescence takes about 1 nanosecond. S0 and S1 represent different electronic states. The other numbers (here 0β3 are

Spectroscopy Overview
An overview of electromagnetic radiation absorption. This example discusses the general principle using visible light as specific example. A white beam source -- emitting light of multiple wavelengths -- is focused on a sample (the complementary color pairs are indicated by the yellow dotted lines. Upon striking the sample, photons that match the energy gap of the molecules present (green light in
Spin Echo
Prior to a 90Β° excitation pulse no transverse magnetization exists and no signal is recieved. After the 90Β° pulse, the created transverse magnetization starts its precession and a signal oscillating with the Larmor frequency can be oserved. This signal (also called the free induction decay (FID)) decays with the relaxation time T2* due to the spin-spin relaxation (T2) and a potentially inhomogeneo

Aqueous Potassium Ferricyanide Magnetic Circular Dichroism
The absorption (lower) and magnetic circular dichroism (upper) spectra of K3Fe(CN)6 as a 0.685 mM solution in water at 20 Β°C. Data collected Mar 30, 2024 on a Jasco J-1700 CD spectrometer with an applied magnetic field of 1.5 T. The three features are assigned in the literature as ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transitions. The MCD C term sign pattern is consistent with the orbital description on the right.

Patch Clamp Chip
A patch clamp chip designed to record electrical currents in single cells. These are typically used in ion channel drug screening studies. One example is testing depression medications for their effect on ion channels in neurons. Typically the ion channels are genetically grafted into a heart or kidney cell so the neuron ion channel can be used with the patch chip. This patch chip has an inner recording chamber filled with intracellular fluid and an outer chamber filled with extracellular fluid. A whole cell patch clamp recording can be made after the cell forms a "giga seal" with the patch chip which directs the cell currents into the intracellular chamber where the amplifier can measure the ionic currents.
Patch Clamp Droplet
Schematic of patch clamp system using a standard pipette and cells in a suspension culture. This system uses surface tension and gravity to position the cells near the tip of the pipette.
